Introduction

2006_wc_fanfestSport dominates the media - it dominates lives. It develops motivation, team spirit, fills our recreation times and influences what we wear. If we don't play it for real, we watch it, listen to it or play it virtually on our computers. For most it's a pastime, for others it's a living. For some it's an obsession ... even a religion.

Sport is one of the main reasons why people watch TV. In the UK radio stations BBC 5Live and talkSPORT serve the great demand for sport. In April 2009 talkSPORT’s audience was 2.4 million per week, 5% of the British population (source: www.mediauk.com).

The FIFA World Cup™ and the Olympic Games are now not only the biggest sporting events in history, but also the biggest media events ever staged.

The Strategic Importance of Sport in Broadcasting

“Sport defines much of a nation’s character and national broadcasters have regarded the coverage of their national sporting teams at major sporting events as being part of their broadcasting heritage. All other issues: program scheduling, news and current affairs, transmission difficulties, music and the arts come way down the list in comparison to sport.”

“The Importance of Public Broadcasting” – Donald McDonald, Chairman, Australian Broadcasting Corporation to Melbourne Media Club, 3rd September 1999

The Sports Fan

crowd_greek_flags2K Plus International Sports Media exists for the sports fan. We aim to show that following Jesus Christ is relevant for the sports fan in the 21st century and that living according to Jesus’ teaching offers the best lifestyle around.

How We Operate

dr_mulaedziWe report from major sporting events with news and comment reflecting a belief in Jesus Christ. We talk to sports people who follow Christ about the relevance of their faith among the joys, challenges, pressures and sacrifices of their sport. We ask how they cope with disappointment and the pressures of being role models for young people.

We produce a weekly radio programme, Planet Sport, heard on radio stations around the world. You can also hear the show on the website, www.planetsport.tv, and download the show as a weekly podcast from iTunes.

Why 2K Plus?

The name was chosen by a team of partners at a planning meeting in Leeds in September 1998 with this rationale:
  • 2K: signifies our relevance in the new millennium;
  • Plus: indicates that we are more than simply another sports media agency. We go behind the sporting events to meet competitors, volunteers and officials who would not normally receive media attention. We promote a lifestyle based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and encourage sports fans to follow his ways.
  • Plus: the symbol for plus - + - also suggests the cross on which Christ died
