The Friendly Games
The Commonwealth Games are sometimes called the friendly games because everyone can speak English. This results in everyone here being able to communicate. Yesterday I chatted to people from Sri Lanka, Kenya, Scotland, and the Pacific Islands. We all had somethign to talk about. The games (or in this case Rugby).
Now, I have another reason to call these the friendly games. I have been spending a lot of time with friends. I know one does not really need an excuse to visit friends, but making the flight to Melbourne on a whim seems a bit much. BUT, with the help of the Victorian Government making the Commonwealth Games holidays, my friends can get time off!
I have even almost converted them to Rugby... My sporting obsession. Miranda, whose name means one to be admired in English, which is the language here, has never been to a game before, but now considers rugby to incoperate athletics, acrobatics, wrestling, hugging, occasional boxing and even ballroom dancing. Personally I did not see all that, but she did enjoy the Niue War cries and the English Singing.
Her friends have come along to the games, and I have met them. I have also been out and about meeting friends of friends and this weekend at church I will catch up with some family I have not seen in ages! So the games is not only bringing the whole of the Commonwealth together, but my friends and family together too!
