XVIII Commonwealth Games
Mardo Gray's view of the Games
18th March 2006

Spirit of the Games.

You know, if you can't get into the spirit of the Games currently going on in Victoria, I'd have to say you're deliberately trying not to.

There are signs up all over the city of Melbourne. Flags waving, ads on TV and the paper I read in my Italian Cafe this morning seemed to consist of nothing else but games information.

These Games are not solely confined to Melbourne though, other centres such as Geelong and Ballarat also have their share of events. Basketball, which has a lot of support in Victoria and is a real medal chance for Australia, in both men's and women's, is hardly in Melbourne at all.

If you wanted to avoid the hype, you should have left Melbourne a long time ago. But this is Melbourne, home of the first Olympics in Australia, home of the Cricketing Shrine, the MCG. Home of Australian Rules football, and home of just about every other sport that has ever been played in this country.

If you don't like sports, this is the wrong city. After the rugby sevens last week, people are even suggesting bringing a leg of the international circuit here to!

No matter what you think of sport, it is hard to deny there is a party going on in Melbourne. The Family is in town, the place is ready, there's nothing left to do, but get in the spirit.
