XVIII Commonwealth Games
Mardo Gray's view of the Games
19th March 2006

Coz I'm Free.

Kathy Freeman, Australian national hero, has a tattoo on her arm which reads "Coz I'm free". In Melbourne now, we may as well say that about the games, because the games are almost free!

Let's just take yesterday for instance. Saturday morning at St Kilda, the women's Triathalon was on. In the Afternoon, the men's competition. Two top level events free to whoever turned up to watch. Today, Sunday, the Marathon will be run, and lets not forget the walking is coming up too. All this is free.

It is not just the competition which the thrifty man can enjoy. The festival of Melbourne this year has tied in to the games. Last night I saw a free Latin Jazz Combo. I could have also gone to see theatre, art displays, comedy, circus and tonight I'm off to the Sidney Myer bowl to watch a spectacular of percussion from many countries of the Commonwealth, the Caribbean, the sub-continent, Africa and even Scotland!

Best of all, the fabulous and famous public transport system of Melbourne is free to anyone off to see a games event. Since the opening ceremony I have not paid for a single tram ticket!

As you can imagine, this makes the games open to all, even cash strapped families. All I can say to everyone around the world is that even Melbourne's infamous weather is beautiful, and we wish you were here.
