Atmosphere
Last night I went to the World All-Star percussion extraganza at the Sidney Myer Bowl. This Famous Melbourne landmark is well known throughout Australia as the home to Carols by Candle Light.
The Drummers and friends were a little louder than the usual sedate renditions of popular Christmas hymns though. The Dhou Foundation from India and the Renegade Steel Drummers from Trinidad had the crowd up and dancing, much to the annoyance of the local constabulary.
These drummers were not out here just to perform though. 80 young percusioninsts from Australia had seminars and workshops with some of the worlds best, and then got to perform in front of the appreciative crowd.
These Students will never forget what they have learnt during the games. They will think the $300 million the games were rumoured to have cost was money well spent! And so do I.
You see, after the Olympic Games in 2000, I became an event addict. I went to the sports, volunteered, went to the side events such as pin trading and busking and was hooked. When the Rugby World Cup was in Australia, I saw 6 matches (do not ask how much that cost), volunteered again, and also went to the art displays on at the same time... If you don't believe me, read my reviews, they are still up on the 2K Plus website!
With this, my first Commonwealth games, I am again in. People are everywhere. My Local friends are amazed, the city is buzzing. If the cafes could manage to stay open when events were finishing everything would be perfect!
But I am leaving soon, and will have to search for my next festival fix. What then? Rugby World Cup in France? World Games in Tapai? I will have to wait and see.
