What is 2K Plus?

2K Plus is incorporated as a private limited company in the UK. The company is a UK registered charity, number 1091941. For more information on UK charities visit www.charity-commission.gov.uk

2K Plus has a policy of working in partnership with other Christ-centred organisations and individuals. We employ just one member of staff to plan and coordinate our field events. Operating this way 2K Plus managed a team of 16 reporting from the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and 18 at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002.

What does 2K Plus do?

2K Plus exists to promote a Christ-centred lifestyle to sports fans around the world. The primary medium we use is radio but increasingly we are using other media such as print and the internet.

We aim to reflect the teaching of Jesus Christ in both the manner and content of our reporting. So, for example, we will interview sports people who are committed followers of Christ and report on moral issues in sport such as honesty, gamesmanship and drugs-taking.

The aim is that sports fans will be attracted to the alternative lifestyle offered by Jesus Christ and be challenged to become his followers and members of his worldwide church.

Why the name 2K Plus?

The name was chosen in 1998 when there was a lot of attention on the upcoming millennium in 2000.

"2K" signifies our relevance in the new millennium. "Plus" indicates that we are more than simply another sports media agency. We go behind the sporting events to meet competitors, volunteers and officials who would not normally receive media attention. We also promote a lifestyle based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and encourage sports fans to follow his ways. The symbol for the word "Plus" - + - also suggests the cross on which Christ died.

What sports does 2K Plus cover?

Historically we have covered the larger, multi-discipline events, eg Olympic Games, World Student Games, All Africa Games and Commonwealth Games. Over the past five years we have also built up experience of track and field athletics at IAAF Grand Prix events in UK and Europe.

Increasingly we are including single discipline events. In 2002 we covered the FIFA World Cup (soccer), in 2003 the World Cup of Cricket and World Cup of Rugby.

Events that we cover are selected on the criteria of (1) demand from radio stations and their audiences, and (2) available resources, especially personnel.

In what languages does 2K Plus report?

This depends on the requirements of the radio stations and personnel available. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000 we provided reports in English, Spanish, Shona, Mandarin, Cantonese and Afrikaans. At the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002 we provided reports in English, Shona and Afrikaans. At the All Africa Games in Abuja in 2003 we reported in English, Swahili, French, Shona, Ndebele and Creole.

The aim is always to speak to the radio listener in his or her own mother-tongue.

How does 2K Plus operate?

Radio features are posted on our ftp site and downloaded by radio stations around the world. We also deliver reports by ISDN and telephone. At the Commonwealth Games a partner organisation delivered our material to radio stations in Africa by satellite. Material that does not date quickly is also supplied on CD. Material is provided to radio stations free of charge.

Why do radio stations broadcast your material?

Many of the stations we serve are smaller, community stations who cannot afford commercial sports feeds. Our free service enables them to cover major sporting events which are of interest to their listeners.

At some events we are the only radio agency serving certain countries. At the All Africa Games in Abuja in October 2003 we were the only radio agency providing material to radio stations in Seychelles and Mauritius.

Some stations specifically request Christ-centred sports material which is not readily available from other radio agencies, eg interviews with athletes talking about their faith in Christ.

Our reports go behind the scenes at major sporting events to captures aspects rarely covered by other radio agencies. For example, at the Summer Olympics we talk to some of the thousands of volunteers and visit the Arts Festival which accompanies each Summer Games. Experience has shown that these aspects are popular with listeners.
