Commonwealth Games 2006 - Mardo Gray's View: 23rd March PDF Print E-mail

Let someone else have a go(ld)!

On Monday morning, I checked the medal Tally. Of the 71 nations in the Commonwealth, only 21 had one medals. Once again I may go on about the wealth not being common, and this being reflected in the money spent on sports, but I won't.

This has since changed, 34 countries and territories, almost half the competing nations, now have at least one medal.

I love watching Australia win. Especially at Rugby and Sumo wrestling. But after Australia having as many gold's as the next 3 teams combined, I am looking for new nations to cheer for.

Now, I still want Australia to win my pet sports, e.g. Hockey. But when it comes to other sports in which even the smallest Island may compete, I will be going for anyone else! Malta in Bowls, Niue in Weight lifting, Pakistan in shooting. Norfolk Island, Maldives and Cyprus at anything.

Let's hope everyone wins at least something while they are here. It means the games are not a one sided affair. We need India, one of the world's largest nations, doing well. We need the African nations, showing strongly, especially considering where the next games will be held.

So, if you think the top five on the medal tally already have enough, go cheer for someone else. Choose your favourite colours and find a flag to match. Look who has the most fun supporters or just pick one at random, there are still a few days to go!
